INTERVIEW

with

Mike Valvent
Mike Valvent

What does Valvent mean?
Good question. Basically, Valvent is the sum of two words, Valve and Vent. Together they create new meaning. Valve is what controls flow. Vent is usually an aggressive expression or a release. So what is it? The logical definition would be, Valvent is the aggressive flow of expression;. However, the more interesting and perverted approach would be,Valvent is the aggressive flow of my release. All sexual connotations intact of course.

How long have you been in the music industry?

The music industry, as in all things that is music, I'd say since birth. I suppose that requires a little explanation. My father was a touring musician back in the 60's. He eventually met my mother-to-be who eventually started singing for the band. It's a bit more complicated than that, but to make a long story short, the 70's rolled around and I came into the picture. I spent my childhood running around nightclubs and sleeping behind bars, its sounds crazy I know, but it's true. I was constantly exposed to the live disco beat of the era. I got to spend a lot of time with the instruments; I was paid to shine them after rehearsals and gigs. The drummer was often late or absent from rehearsals, so incidentally the first instrument I learned to play was drums. They often needed backup, I don't think I was any older than 7, my feet barely reached the drum pedal. But eventually I started learning every instrument I could get my hands on. While all the kids on my street would play outside after school, I would spend my time on my dad's custom analog synths. They sounded great cranked real loud. Since then I've been in many bands and played a lot of clubs. But my love has always been writing and recording. That's pretty much been my focus lately.

What inspired you to create your type of music?

I'm mostly inspired by hot bitches shaking their asses to cool music. I like making danceable stuff, but with a more intelligent or emotional connection. It's different but I think people get tired of the same shit. If I had to categorize my music, I would say it's predominantly rock/industrial, but with my unique flavor. Lyric wise, I write about fascinating people, perversions, and personalstuff. Unfortunately, not everything I write is sexual in nature, but it's something to aspire to! I often feel connected with those around me, no matter what their culture or interests. Everyone has a story to tell, sometimes it can take a minute, sometimes a lifetime.

Who are your musical influences?

I have a rather odd mix of musical influences. I grew up with Fleetwood Mac, Bee Gees, and The Eagles. Eventually I transitioned to a mixture of rock, metal and synthpop, it's insane I know. Pet Shop Boys, Van Halen, Depeche mode, Iron Maiden, Duran Duran, Dokken, Tears for Fears, you name it. Then I came across Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey, the gates of inspiration finally opened up. It was everything I ever wanted, heavy guitar riffs, synths, thrashing drum beats. But all the other influences never left me. You'll probably hear a lotof styles in my music. I used to feel that I had to restrict Valvent to a particular genre, but I've taken a different approach. Versatility.

What are your plans with Valvent? Tours, festivals?
I don't have any current plans for tours as of yet. My focus is getting the newest CD, ControlFreak, released. As far as Valvent long term, I definitely wouldn't mind it becoming an international success. Fortunately I'm surrounded by a lot of extremely talented musicians andcreative people. Anything could happen.

How valuable do you feel internet radio will be to the future of new artists?

There's no doubt that internet radio is already an invaluable resource to artists. It's like asking how valuable internet video is to the porn industry.

Do you feel a Street Team is vital to the expansion of new artist fan base?

When it comes to spreading the word about a new artist, there's nothing more compelling and approachable than a group of cute girls waiving flyers in the air. I remember those days, I'm sure it still happens somewhere out there. The term Street Team has really changed these days. It used to be a group of devoted individualsspreading the word by mouth. That's great for the local scene, but limiting. Now street teams concentrate their efforts across the virtual highway. Not only is it vital, it's required.

What would you consider your fan base to be?

I'd like everyone on the planet to be my fan base. Perhaps the entire universe. But currently, I think anyone who listens to rock, metal, Goth, or industrial may find my music interesting. It's not really a matter of genre preference, but more so the individual. Those who are unique and looking for something different.

When are you releasing your new album?

Soon I hope. The music is done; we're currently working on the CD layout. I'm hoping before the end of May.

What inspired your new albums theme?

ControlFreak. It's mostly about what the title indicates. It's on the BDSM side of things, it seems to be a prevailing thought. There's a lot of freaky shit in there. You might be able to get a similar experience from a porn movie.

What process do you use to create a new song?

It usually starts with a beat and a guitar riff. Vocals usually come later. Once I get it all recorded, I change everything about a thousand times, I go mad, I drive everyone crazy, realize that the first mix was fine, then I'm done.

Who would you like to tour with?

I'd like to tour with Ministry, Rob Zombie, and Kiss. All at the same time in one mega tour.

What would be your dream tour?

My dream tour would be interplanetary. The final destination would be earth. That would be the grand finale amidst a massive crowd engaging in orgy.
